Tetrahydrofuran (THF) is a versatile organic solvent widely used in industrial, pharmaceutical, and chemical synthesis applications. It is a colorless, highly volatile, and water-miscible liquid with a low viscosity, making it an ideal solvent for polymers, resins, coatings, adhesives, and organic reactions. THF is also commonly used in Grignard reactions, lithium battery electrolytes, and industrial extraction processes.

Polymerisation
In the presence of strong acids, THF Tetrahydrofuran converts into a linear polymer known as poly(tetramethylene ether) glycol (PTMEG) or polytetramethylene oxide (PTMO).

THF's other main application is as an industrial solvent for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and in varnishes.
Tetrahydrofuran is also frequently employed in polymer science.
It is also used as a component in mobile phases for reversed-phase liquid chromatography.
It is also used as a solvent in 3D printing with PLA plastics. THF can be used to clean clogged 3D printer parts and to finish prints, removing extruder lines and adding shine to the finished product. THF has recently been used as a co-solvent in lithium metal batteries to help stabilise the metal anode.

In the presence of a solid acid catalyst, THF reacts with hydrogen sulfide to produce tetrahydrothiophene.
