Pentadiene is a highly reactive molecule that can undergo reactions such as addition and polymerization. It can undergo addition reactions of olefinic character with other compounds, e.g. with bromine water to form 1,2-dibromopentane.

Pentadiene is mainly used in the production of petroleum resins.
