Products Description
What is N,N-Dimethylformamide (DMF)?
N,N-Dimethylformamide, commonly abbreviated as DMF, is a colorless, highly polar aprotic organic solvent with the chemical formula C3H7NO. It is miscible with water and most common organic solvents, giving it excellent dissolving power for a wide range of polymers, resins, and organic compounds. DMF is one of the core solvents used in the production of polyurethane (PU) synthetic leather, and it also plays an important role in spandex (elastane) fiber spinning, pharmaceutical intermediate synthesis, and pesticide formulation. Because of its high boiling point and strong solvency, DMF is widely traded as a bulk industrial chemical across the textile, leather, electronics, and fine chemical industries.

Applications:
- Key solvent for polyurethane (PU) resin and PU synthetic leather / artificial leather production
- Spinning solvent for polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and spandex (elastane) fiber manufacturing
- Reaction solvent and reagent in pharmaceutical and agrochemical intermediate synthesis
- Solvent carrier in pesticide and herbicide formulations
- Used in the electronics industry for PCB cleaning, photoresist stripping and etching processes
- Used as a selective solvent in petrochemical gas separation (e.g. acetylene and butadiene extraction)
- Used as a solvent in adhesives, coatings and specialty resin formulations
Storage & Handling
- Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated warehouse, away from direct sunlight and oxidizing agents
- DMF is hygroscopic; keep containers tightly sealed to avoid moisture absorption, which can affect purity in fiber and coating applications
- Classified as a combustible liquid (UN 2265, Class 3, PG III); handle away from open flames and heat sources
- DMF is reproductively toxic and can be absorbed through skin; use appropriate PPE (gloves, goggles, ventilation) as specified in the SDS, and note relevant regional regulations (e.g. REACH restrictions in the EU) before use
- Recommended shelf life: 12 months from production date when stored under proper sealed conditions

FAQ
Q1: What is DMF mainly used for?
A1: N,N-Dimethylformamide (DMF) is mainly used as a solvent in PU synthetic leather production, spandex/PAN fiber spinning, pharmaceutical and agrochemical synthesis, and as a processing aid in electronics manufacturing.
Q2: Is DMF CAS 68-12-2 a dangerous good, and how is it classified for shipping?
A2: Yes, it is classified as UN 2265, Class 3 (flammable liquid), Packing Group III, based on its flash point of 58°C. It is packed and documented in accordance with IMDG/ADR dangerous goods regulations for sea and road transport.
Q3: What grade do you supply?
A3: We supply industrial grade N,N-Dimethylformamide, suitable for PU leather, fiber, and general solvent applications. Please contact us if your process requires a specific grade or low-water specification.
Q4: Can you provide COA and SDS for each shipment?
A4: Yes, COA and SDS are provided with every order, and batch-specific COA can be issued for your reference before or after loading.
Q5: Can DMF be substituted for NMP or DMAc in my formulation?
A5: DMF is sometimes used interchangeably with NMP or DMAc in certain PU and polymer solvent systems, but polarity, boiling point, and toxicity profiles differ. We recommend small-batch compatibility testing before switching solvents in your process.
Q6: What are your payment methods?
A6: T/T, D/P, L/C, D/A, O/A, Paypal, Alipay and Western Union
Q7: What is your delivery time?
A7: Usually, we ship within 7-15 days after order confirmation.
