Physical Properties

Appearance: Usually appears as white crystals or a crystalline powder.

Melting Point: 69 - 71 °C

Solubility: Soluble in water, ethanol, ether, benzene, chloroform and other common organic solvents.

Caprolactam is synthesized through the reaction of cyclohexanone with hydrogen cyanide, followed by acid hydrolysis of the resulting cyanocyclohexane. This process yields caprolactam, which can then be purified through distillation or crystallization. The chemical structure of caprolactam, specifically its lactam ring, makes it an important intermediate in various chemical syntheses .

Applications of Caprolactam (CPL):

(1)Most of caprolactam is used to produce polycaprolactam, about 90% of which is used to produce synthetic fiber, and 10% is used as plastic, which is used to manufacture gears, bearings, pipes, medical devices, electrical and insulating materials. Epsilon-caprolactam is also used in coatings, plastic agents and a small amount of lysine synthesis.
(2)It is mainly used to make caprolactam resin, fiber and artificial leather, and also used as raw materials.
