Propylene glycol (PG) also known as 1,2-Propanediol,MPG,it is a colourless, odourless and hygroscopic viscous liquid, miscible with water, ethanol, ether and other organic solvents. It is chemically stable, but can undergo substitution, esterification and other reactions, such as with carboxylic acids under the action of a catalyst to generate ester compounds; it can also be dehydrated under certain conditions to generate propylene glycol ether.

Uses
- Food industry: Propylene glycol (PG) is commonly used as food additives to prevent food from drying out and prolong shelf life; it can also be used as a solvent for spices and pigments to enhance the organoleptic quality of food.
- Pharmaceutical industry: It is a common auxiliary in drug preparation, can be used as solvent to dissolve insoluble drugs; in ointment, cream and other topical preparations, it plays the role of moisturising and thickening; PG can also be used in the preparation of antifreeze, to prevent drugs from freezing in low temperature environment.
