Diethanolamine is a colourless to yellowish viscous liquid or crystal with ammonia smell, soluble in water and ethanol. It is weakly alkaline and can react in many ways. It is used for gas purification, surfactant production, etc. It is toxic and hazardous to human body and environment, and should be stored in a fireproof manner and isolated from other substances.

Uses
- Gas purification: Diethanolamine is used in natural gas and other industries to remove acid gases such as carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide.
- Surfactant: Raw material for the production of anionic and nonionic surfactants, used in personal care products such as detergents.
- Metal treatment: DEA is used as corrosion inhibitor for boiler water etc.
- Textile and leather: Used as an emulsifier for oils, etc. under acidic conditions, and as a softener for leather and synthetic fibres.
- Others: Intermediate of herbicide glyphosate, used as reagent and gas chromatography fixing solution in analytical chemistry. Diethanolamine is also used in electroplating, medical treatment and other fields.
