Monoethanolamine (MEA) is a simple ethanolamine with one primary amine and one alcohol group. It is a colorless liquid with a mild ammonia odour. MEA is mainly used in sweetening natural gas and coal gas, and as soap or amides in heavy-duty detergents. It is also used in the production of ethylene amines.

Uses
- Gas purification: Monoethanolamine is used to remove acid gases such as carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide from natural gas and synthesis gas.
- Surfactant: MEA is an important raw material for the preparation of nonionic surfactant and anionic surfactant, and is used in detergent, emulsifier and other products.
- Pharmaceutical field: Ethanolamine is used to synthesise many kinds of drugs, such as anti-cancer drugs, anti-arrhythmic drugs, etc. It can also be used as solvent and co-solvent of drugs.
- Others: Monoethanolamine is used as pH regulator and emulsifier in cosmetics, used in textile industry for fabric treatment, also used in the preparation of rubber accelerator, metal working fluids and so on.
