It is one of the most important acetylation reagents in organic synthesis: the acetyl group (CH₃CO–) is transferred to alcohols, amines and other nucleophiles to form esters, amides and acetylated derivatives. Applications：
- Acetylation reagent: acetyl chloride acylates alcohols, phenols, amines and other nucleophiles to produce esters, amides and acetylated derivatives.

Storage
Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated warehouse, away from ignition sources and heat. The container must be tightly sealed to exclude moisture. Store separately from oxidizers, alcohols, bases and other incompatible substances - do not store together. (Acetyl chloride reacts with water and alcohols; moisture ingress causes decomposition with hydrogen-chloride evolution.)
Safety and Handling Information
Acetyl chloride is a hazardous chemical and must be handled accordingly:
- Reactivity: reacts violently with water and alcohols, releasing heat and hydrogen chloride gas; keep strictly dry and add to water never in reverse (quench by slow addition to a large excess of cold water with agitation, or use a proper quenching procedure).
- Flammability: flammable liquid (flash point about 4°C, closed cup); keep away from ignition sources.
- Corrosivity: causes burns to skin, eyes and respiratory tract; vapours are irritating and corrosive. Use chemical-resistant gloves, goggles and protective clothing, with adequate ventilation.
- Transport: classified under UN 1717 (Acetyl chloride, flammable liquid, corrosive); transport in accordance with dangerous-goods regulations.
- Documentation: the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) must be consulted and supplied with every shipment; comply with local chemical regulations.
