Does acetonitrile Acn chemical dissolve plastic?
CAS 75-05-8 Acetonitrile is moderately to strongly incompatible with many common plastics. While it is not a universal solvent for all plastics, it can damage or dissolve some.
Plastics to avoid: Acetonitrile Acn readily dissolves or severely crazes polystyrene (PS), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA, also known as acrylic) and many other styrene-based plastics. It also adversely affects some types of polycarbonate (PC).
Acceptable plastics (for temporary use): Polypropylene (PP) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) generally have good short-term resistance. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE or Teflon®) is essentially inert.
Best practice: Always check a chemical compatibility chart before using ACN with any plastic container, tubing or seal. For laboratory use, the standard is glass with PTFE seals or specialised HPLC-grade solvent bottles.
