Methanol and acetonitrile are organic acids commonly used as the mobile phase in reverse-phase chromatography. But, CAS 75-05-8 acetonitrile (ACN) is generally considered a stronger solvent than Methanol (MeOH).
Is Acetonitrile Acn (CAS 75-05-8) a stronger solvent than methanol (CAS 67-56-1)?
In HPLC (Reversed-Phase): Acetonitrile is a stronger eluent than methanol. It more effectively displaces analytes from the C18 column. To get the same retention time, you need less ACN in water than methanol. ACN also has lower viscosity and generates less backpressure, allowing for faster flow rates and higher efficiency.
As a General Solvent/Polarity: Acetonitrile is more polar than methanol. Methanol can engage in strong hydrogen bonding though, which acetonitrile cannot. So methanol is often a better solvent for polar, hydrogen-bonding compounds like phenols or carboxylic acids.
For Dissolving Power: "Stronger" isn't absolute. Methanol is better for dissolving polar, protic materials. Acetonitrile is better for dissolving a wide range of compounds and salts, and is superior where a non-interfering, non-hydrogen-bonding solvent is needed.
