What is Ivermectin and Levamisole?

 

Ivermectin

Ivermectin is an anti-parasite medication used in the treatment and prevention of heartworm and intestinal worms in horses, sheep, goats, cats, and dogs. It may be used to kill the microfilaria of heartworm in infected animals. Ivermectin is not effective against tapeworms or liver flukes.

 

Levamisole

Levamisole is an antiparasitic drug and immune stimulant that is used to treat many kinds of nematodes in dogs, cats, poultry and livestock animals like cows, sheep, pigs and goats. In swine, it is used to treat infections caused by Stephanus and Metastrongylus.

What is the difference between ivermectin and levamisole?

 

Target parasites:

Ivermectin: Effective against a broad spectrum of internal and external parasites, including nematodes, lungworms, parasitic insects and mites. Commonly used to treat a wide range of parasitic infections in cattle, sheep, pigs and dogs.

Levamisole: mainly effective against nematodes, especially gastrointestinal and lung parasites such as hookworms, roundworms, whipworms, etc., but not against ectoparasites and tapeworms.

 

Scope of application:

Ivermectin: widely used in many kinds of animals, especially cattle, sheep, pigs and dogs, effective against parasitic insects, mites and nematodes.

Levamisole: mainly used for the treatment of endoparasitic infections, especially nematodes, in ruminants (e.g. cattle, sheep) and pigs.
