What is Mono Ethylene Glycol (MEG) used for?

1.Antifreeze and Coolant

  • The most well known use of ethylene glycol is as a key component in automotive antifreeze and coolant formulations. Its low freezing point and high boiling point properties allow it to prevent engine coolant from freezing in cold weather and boiling over in hot conditions.

2.Polymer Production

  • PET Production: Monoethylene glycol is a primary raw material for manufacturing PET. PET is used in a wide range of products, including plastic bottles for beverages, food containers, and fibers for textiles and carpets.
  • Other Polymers: MEG can also be used in the production of other polyesters and polyurethanes, which find applications in coatings, adhesives, and foams.
  • Solvent and Humectant: In some industries, ethylene glycol acts as a solvent for substances that are not soluble in water or other common solvents. It is also used as a humectant in products like cosmetics, inks, and adhesives.

Mono Ethylene Glycol (MEG) Uses

Is monoethylene glycol toxic?

Under normal conditions of use, ethylene glycol is not expected to cause irritation to the skin, eyes or respiratory tract. However, in applications where vapours or mists are created, inhaling may cause a mild burning sensation in the nose, throat and lungs. MEG is classified as harmful if swallowed.

Safety information:

1. It is toxic and may cause damage to health, especially if inhaled, ingested or in contact with skin.
2.Prolonged or excessive exposure to ethylene glycol may cause kidney, liver and nervous system disorders.
3. When working with MEG, wear protective gloves, goggles and clothing to avoid direct contact with skin and eyes. Operate in a well ventilated environment and try to avoid inhaling its vapors.
