What is Low Molecular Weight Polyisobutylene?

 

Polyisobutylene is a colorless, odorless, non-toxic viscous liquid or semi-solid state of the substance, with heat resistance, oxygen resistance, UV resistance, acid and alkali resistance and other chemical properties. It is widely used in the fields of petroleum additives, carrier compounds, adhesives and blending improvement with other polymers. For lubricating oil and its additives, low molecular weight polyisobutylene (PB, PIB for short) is mainly used, and the common molecular weights are 950, 1300, 2400.

1.Features

Low molecular weight polyisobutylene can improve the lubrication performance of lubricating oil, reduce the formation of carbon deposits, lower the energy consumption of equipment and prolong the service life.

  • Viscosity control: PIB helps to maintain correct oil thickness and improve performance at high and low temperatures.
  • Oxidation Resistance: It prevents the oil from decomposing when exposed to heat and air, thus extending oil life.
  • Seal Protection: PIB keeps rubber seals in the engine soft and flexible, preventing leaks.
  • Reduces Friction: It helps reduce wear by minimizing friction between engine parts.

 

2.Applications

1. Application in four-stroke engine oils
Low molecular polybutene has been considered as a viscosity builder in four-stroke engine oils.
2. Application in two-stroke engine oils
Low molecular weight polyisobutylene is used in two-stroke engine oils to protect the environment and the locomotive itself. Generally, low molecular weight polybutene with a molecular weight of about 950 is used in the formulation.
3. Application in industrial gear oils
Generally PIB2400 is used in industrial gear oil. Using 500SN to add different ratios of PIB2400, can be formulated from ISO 150 to ISO 1000 viscosity levels of industrial gear oils.
4 Application in Automotive Gear Oil
Since automotive gear oils have more demanding frying stability requirements than industrial gear oils, it is recommended to use PB1300 to completely replace 150BS bright oil, so as to meet the requirements of frying stability of the oil.
5 Application in high temperature chain oil
Adopt PIB1300 and ester oil, alkyl diphenyl ether, PAO oil to adjust to the appropriate viscosity, and add TCP, DW7007 and other additives can be deployed to different types of high temperature chain oil.
6. Application in metal working oils
Low molecular polybutene is widely used in metal processing. For example, PIB2400 and PIB1300 can be used in quenching oil to play the role of cooling agent and brightener, and PB2400 can be used in cutting oil to reduce smoke. Low molecular polybutylene can reduce deposits in non-ferrous metal drawing.
7. Application in grease
The use of low molecular polybutene (PB1300, PB2400) in grease can improve the adhesion of oil. In short, low molecular polybutene can firmly adsorb on the metal surface, reduce the coefficient of friction, improve the lubrication under extreme conditions, and protect the metal surface from corrosion.
