Polyisobutylene pib is used in adhesive and sealant formulations. Its use accounts for about 13-15% of total global consumption. Typically low molecular weight polyisobutenes are used as tackifiers or plasticizers, while medium to high molecular weight polyisobutenes are used to regulate elasticity, elongation, cohesion and airtightness.

1.PIB in Adhesives
Polyisobutylene PIB(PB) provides long-lasting adhesion in pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA), hot-melt adhesive (HMA) and hot-melt pressure-sensitive adhesive (HMPSA) formulations, fusing with the resins, elastomers and solvents in the adhesive.
Polyisobutylene-added adhesives are used in paper laminates, labels, medical bandages; paper, film, foil and industrial tapes.
Polyisobutylene can be used as skin permeable tablets and block silicone seal pressure sensitive adhesive formulations. Polyisobutylene can also be used as hot melt adhesive tackifiers, plasticizers and humidifiers.
2.PIB Applications in Sealants
Adding PIB to sealants enhances the plasticity of the elastomers used to create cohesion and rubber-like properties. Adding PIB to sealants improves adhesion and weatherability, water resistance and oxidative stability. Polyisobutylene is also used as a feedstock polymer for window sealants.
3.Other applications for PIB
Tapes containing polyisobutylene prevent corrosion of pipes in underground or underwater environments. Polyisobutylene-based compounds containing mineral oils, paraffin waxes, thermoplastic elastomers and low-density polyethylene are infused into fiber optic cables to improve the cable's resistance to voltage breakdown, moisture and self-healing properties.
