At room temperature, diethanolamine is a colourless crystalline solid. It has a slight ammonia odour. It is soluble in water and alcohol, soluble in acetone, slightly soluble in ether and benzene, insoluble in carbon tetrachloride and heptane. It can absorb water and carbon dioxide in the air, and its freezing point is significantly reduced when mixed with water. Diethanolamine is combustible, can react with strong oxidants and decompose with heat to release toxic ammonia oxide fumes.
