What is CH3COOH (acetic acid)?

CAS 64-19-7 identifies Acetic Acid, also known as glacial acetic acid.  Its structural formula is CH3COOH.

Due to its antimicrobial properties, acetic acid CH3COOH is used as a cleaning agent and disinfectant. It is effective against bacteria and molds, making it suitable for household cleaning purposes.

CAS 64-19-7 acetic acid is an effective and eco-friendly cleaning agent, though its use depends on concentration:

Dilute acetic acid (5–10% solution, e.g. household vinegar): Ideal for domestic cleaning, it removes limescale from kitchen appliances such as kettles and coffee makers, soap scum from bathroom tiles and water stains from glass surfaces. It also neutralises alkaline residues (e.g. from soap or hard water).

Concentrated acetic acid (60–80%): It is used in industrial cleaning for the removal of heavy-duty mineral deposits or rust from metal equipment. However, protective gear (gloves and goggles) must be worn to avoid skin or eye contact.

Considerations:

Dilution – always dilute stronger acetic acid (80%, 90% industrial grades) with water (e.g. 1 part acid to 9 parts water for a 10% solution).
Surface compatibility – do not use on marble, granite, waxed floors or cast iron as the acid may etch or damage them.
Safety – wear gloves and eye protection with stronger solutions and ensure good ventilation as the smell can be strong.
