How Is Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) Made?

1. Acetone cyanohydrin route: Acetone cyanohydrin reacts with sulfuric acid to produce methacrylamide sulfate, which is hydrolyzed and then esterified with methanol to obtain crude methyl methacrylate. The crude product is then obtained through salting out, crude distillation, and rectification. Acetone cyanohydrin is usually prepared from sodium cyanide.

2. Isobutylene route: Isobutylene undergoes a two-stage oxidation with air in the presence of a molybdenum catalyst. Isobutylene is first oxidized to methacrylaldehyde, and then further oxidized to methacrylic acid. Methacrylamide is esterified with methanol to obtain methyl methacrylate. Recently, a one-step oxidation process has been developed. Isobutylene is directly oxidized to methacrylic acid using N₂O₄ as the oxidant and K₂CO₃ or Mr₁O₂ as the catalyst. It is then esterified with methanol.

3. Propylene Route: Propylene, carbon monoxide, and methanol undergo a carbonylation reaction to produce methyl 2-methoxyisobutyrate, which is then hydrolyzed to methyl methacrylate and methanol.

4. Isobutyraldehyde One-Step Oxidation Method: Using heteropoly acids and their salts as catalysts, isobutyraldehyde is oxidized in one step to produce methacrylic acid, which is then esterified with methanol to form methyl methacrylate.
