Tert-Butyl alcohol (TBA CAS 75-65-0) is used as a solvent and ethanol denaturant. It is an active ingredient of paint remover. It acts as an intermediate in the production of methyl tertiary butyl ether and ethyl tertiary butyl ether by reaction with methanol and ethanol. It is also used in the preparation of tert-butyl chloride, tert-butyl hydroperoxide, isobutylene and methyl methacrylate. It serves as a fuel additive as well as a gasoline octane booster.

Oral Exposure: Ingestion causes nausea, vomiting and gastrointestinal irritation. The oral LD₅₀ for rats is about 3.5 g/kg, indicating low toxicity.
Dermal Exposure: Prolonged skin contact causes dryness, redness and mild dermatitis as TBA can strip the skin's oils. It is not readily absorbed through skin.
Inhalation Exposure: High vapor concentrations can irritate the respiratory tract causing coughing, dizziness and headaches. Chronic inhalation can lead to CNS depression (e.g. fatigue and impaired coordination).
Environmental Toxicity: Tert-Butyl Alcohol TBA is moderately toxic to water organisms and can persist if released improperly. It is biodegradable under aerobic conditions.
