What is Tilmicosin?

 

Tilmicosin is a semi-synthetic macrolide antibiotic. It works by inhibiting protein synthesis. Tilmicosin shows a broad spectrum of activity against Mycoplasma and gram-positive organisms, such as Staphylococcus, and some gram-negative bacteria like Pasteurella multocida and Mannheimia haemolytica.

Tilmicosin is a semi-synthetic macrolide antibiotic for animals. Strong to mycoplasma, antibacterial effect is similar to tylosin, sensitive gram-positive bacteria are staphylococcus aureus, pneumococcus, streptococcus, charcoal bacillus, bacillus pigmentosus, listeria, etc. Sensitive gram-negative bacteria are bacillus jelosus, meningitis diphtheriae, bacillus and so on. Activity against Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Pasteurella and Mycoplasma animalis is stronger than tylosin. 95% of the hemolytic Pasteurella strains are sensitive to this product.

Is Tilmicosin toxic in cattle?

 

Tilmicosin can be toxic to cattle if the injection method and dosage are not correct. The toxic effects on animals are mainly cardiovascular, causing tachycardia and reduced contractility. A single intravenous injection of 5mg/kg in cattle is fatal.
Correct dosage of Tilmicosin
Subcutaneous injection: cattle, 0.033 ml per 1 kg body weight. 1 injection only.

 

Precautions
1. It is forbidden for lactating cows and beef calves.
2. Intravenous injection is prohibited.
3. Intramuscular and subcutaneous injections may cause local reactions (edema, etc.).
4. Cardiovascular status should be closely monitored when injecting this product.
