What is Albendazole used in veterinary

 

Albendazole is used to treat various parasitic infections caused by nematodes, cestodes, and protozoa. It is indicated for the treatment of parasites such as:

1.Gastrointestinal worms (Bunostomum, Cooperia, Chabertia, Haemonchus, Nematodirus, Oesophagostomum, Ostertagia, Strongyloides, and Trichostrongylus)

2.Liver flukes (Fasciola hepatica, adults only)

3.Lungworm (Dictyocaulus viviparus and D. filaria.)

4.Tapeworms (Moniezia)

What are the veterinary side effects of albendazole?

Dogs and Cats

  • Bone marrow suppression: may result in a decrease in white blood cells, red blood cells, or platelets.
  • Gastrointestinal upset: vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite may occur.
  • Liver damage.

 

Cattle and sheep

  • Hepatotoxicity: High doses or prolonged use may affect liver health.
  • Bone Marrow Suppression: Similar to dogs, cattle and sheep may experience a decrease in white blood cells, red blood cells or platelets.

 

Pigs

  • Gastrointestinal upset: may sometimes cause diarrhea or loss of appetite.

 

Horses

  • Dyspepsia: Horses may experience mild dyspepsia such as loss of appetite or constipation.

Albendazole is usually safe in reasonable doses, but overdose or prolonged use may cause the above side effects. Veterinary advice should be followed when using it.
