What is 2,2′-(Ethylenedioxy)diethanethiol (DMDO)?
3,6-Dioxa-1,8-octanedithiol is an organosulfur compound with the appearance of a colorless to light yellow liquid, soluble in many organic solvents such as alcohols and aliphatic hydrocarbons. It can be used as a ligand in the synthesis of metal sulfides, in electrochemistry and in various electrochemical applications.
Uses:
- Cross-linking Agent: DMDO is a dithiol-based cross-linker used for thiolene photopolymerization, which can be used to obtain crosslinked polymeric films.
- Biomedical Research: 3,6-Dioxa-1,8-octanedithiol was used for cleaving peptides in the study to develop synthetic peptide serology to treat chronic Chagas disease.
- Peptide Synthesis: It may be used to develop non-malodorous scavengers in Fmoc-based peptide synthesis.
- Other Applications: 2,2′-(Ethylenedioxy)diethanethiol can be crosslinked with unsaturated olive oil to form a photoinduced eco-friendly film. DMDO is also used in the synthesis of bioanodes for the fabrication of biofuel cells for glucose sensing applications, improving the optical properties of gold nanoclusters, and the development of bio-mediated synthetic polyester.
