What is Fenbendazole?
Fenbendazole is classified as a benzimidazole carbamate. It shows a broad spectrum of activity against both mature and immature nematodes and cestodes. Fenbendazole works by inhibiting glucose uptake. This drains a parasite's glycogen reserves, which leads to its death.
Fenbendazole belongs to the benzimidazole class of anthelmintics and acts by disrupting the parasites' ability to absorb nutrients, specifically inhibiting tubulin polymerization. This leads to impaired energy production and ultimately causes the death of the parasites. Its mode of action makes it effective against a wide range of internal parasites.
What are the negative side effects of fenbendazole?
Some common side effects may include but are not limited to:
- Increased salivation
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Serious side effects may include: Allergy or hypersensitivity reactions.
Used in accordance with the prescribed usage and dosage, generally no adverse reactions, due to the release of antigens from dead parasites, may be secondary to anaphylactic reactions, especially at high doses. Vomiting is occasionally seen in dogs or cats when taken internally, and there is a case report of various types of leukopenia in dogs after taking the drug.
